This award, part of the Tata Trusts’ Parag Initiative, recognizes outstanding authors and illustrators who contribute to the vibrant landscape of children’s books.
At the event, the fifth edition of the Parag Honour List was unveiled, showcasing 28 children’s books in English and 13 in Hindi. Suddhasattwa Basu, known for his remarkable work in magazines, books, and other visual projects, has illustrated over 60 books, including works by renowned authors such as Khushwant Singh, Ruskin Bond, and Vijaya Sulaiman.
In his acceptance speech, Basu expressed his gratitude for the award and emphasized the transformative power of storytelling through art. He has not only illustrated numerous books but also authored captivating picture books for children.
Born in Chandernagore, West Bengal, Basu’s journey into illustrating children’s books was fueled by a love for art and storytelling. His illustrious career includes directing India’s first indigenous animation television serial for children, ‘Ghayab Aya.’
Basu highlighted the importance of illustrations in storytelling, stating that pictures have been a primary medium for documenting and sharing stories across civilizations. He encouraged young illustrators to observe their surroundings and introspect to create meaningful visuals.
The Parag Initiative, under the Tata Trusts, aims to support the development and accessibility of high-quality storybooks for children in various Indian languages. Through initiatives like setting up libraries and developing new books, Parag has made significant strides in nurturing young readers across the country.
