Zimbabwe Appoints Sikandar Raza as Captain for T20I Series Against India
Zimbabwe Cricket has announced the appointment of experienced batsman Sikandar Raza as captain of a youthful squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against world champions India, set to begin on July 6 in Harare. The team, under the leadership of new head coach Justin Sammons, is aiming to rebuild after failing to qualify for the recent T20 World Cup.
The squad features a young lineup, with Raza, a 38-year-old right-hander with 86 matches under his belt, leading the charge as the most experienced player. Luke Jongwe, aged 29 and with 63 appearances, also stands out as a key player in the team.
Notable inclusions in the squad are seasoned pacers Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, with 52 and 51 T20I appearances, respectively. However, veterans like Craig Ervine and Sean Williams, along with Ryan Burl, Joylord Gumbie, and Ainsley Ndlovu, have missed out on selection this time.
The squad also sees the inclusion of Antum Naqvi, a Belgium-born cricketer with Pakistani roots, who has expressed his desire to represent Zimbabwe at the international level and is pending confirmation of his citizenship status after applying for naturalization.
