Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the election of Om Birla as Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, stating that his experience in the previous term would be instrumental in guiding the country in his second consecutive term. Birla, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Kota, Rajasthan, emerged victorious as the Speaker earlier in the day.
Birla, who was the NDA candidate, secured the election against INDIA bloc’s K Suresh through a voice vote. Suresh entered the race after the ruling party and the Opposition failed to reach a consensus.

PM Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi escorted Birla to the Speaker’s chair in a symbolic gesture of unity.
“Under your leadership in the previous term, significant legislative milestones were achieved that eluded us for decades,” Modi commended.
“The 17th Lok Sabha accomplished key bills and set new benchmarks. I am confident that the nation will take pride in the accomplishments of this House,” Modi added.
