New Delhi Witnesses Surge in Power Consumption and Fuel Sales
The intense heat wave and rising humidity marked the onset of the monsoon, resulting in a 9% increase in power consumption in June. As households and commercial establishments extended the usage of cooling appliances, the demand for electricity soared.
The government data revealed that power consumption reached 152.3 billion units (BU) in June, a 9% rise from the previous month. The peak demand met also witnessed a significant uptick, reaching 245.4 gigawatts (GW) amidst the scorching summer heat.
While power consumption surged, the sales of petrol, jet fuel, and LPG recorded moderate gains. Diesel, on the other hand, remained subdued due to a decline in demand from the farm sector.
Despite the challenging conditions, petrol consumption saw a healthy growth of 3.6%, driven by an increased share in new car sales and people’s inclination towards personal vehicles for holiday travel.
Jet fuel sales experienced a 4.3% rise annually, reflecting the lingering effects of the holiday season. However, the demand dropped sequentially by 3.8% compared to May.
LPG sales also exhibited a positive trend, registering a year-on-year growth of over 5%. Nonetheless, the sequential increase was only 0.6%.
In summary, the energy landscape in June portrayed a mixed picture with contrasting trends in power consumption and fuel sales, influenced by the evolving weather patterns and economic activities.
