The Russian Federation’s Nuclear Stockpile
Russia has a formidable nuclear stockpile. According to data from SIPRI, as of January 2024, the Russian Federation possessed a military arsenal of around 4,380 nuclear warheads. Out of these, approximately 2,822 warheads were classified as strategic. Around 1,710 of these warheads were deployed on land- and sea-based ballistic missiles and at bomber bases.
This vast stockpile of nuclear weapons underscores Russia’s significance in the global nuclear landscape. The sheer number of warheads highlights the country’s commitment to maintaining a strong nuclear deterrent.
The presence of such a substantial nuclear stockpile raises important questions about international security, arms control, and the role of nuclear weapons in modern warfare.
