India Meteorological Department Predicts Continued Heatwave Across North India
Welcome to the latest weather update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has forecasted that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will persist across many parts of North India on Wednesday before gradually reducing.
This change in weather conditions is due to an approaching western disturbance towards northwest India. Heatwave conditions have been observed in several states, including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and northern Madhya Pradesh have also experienced heatwave conditions.
Isolated pockets in northeast Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, northwest Rajasthan, and Gangetic West Bengal have reported heatwave conditions as well. The IMD noted that nighttime temperatures ranged from warm to severely warm in some areas, including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar.
Maximum temperatures in the plains of North India have reached between 44-46 degrees Celsius, which is above normal by 5-8 degrees Celsius. The highest recorded temperature in the country was 47.6 degrees Celsius at Prayagraj in East Uttar Pradesh.
In terms of rainfall, isolated exceptionally heavy rainfall occurred over Meghalaya, heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls occurred in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Bihar. The southwest monsoon is expected to advance further into various regions, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and the northwest Bay of Bengal.
The monsoon is also expected to progress into some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand over the next three to four days. Stay tuned for more updates on the weather conditions across the country.
