Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh recently expressed his frustration during a TV show on a Pakistani channel, stating that India might not send its team for the upcoming Champions Trophy due to safety concerns in Pakistan. He emphasized that the safety of Indian players is of utmost importance.
Harbhajan firmly stated, “If our players are not safe in Pakistan, we won’t send the team. Indian cricket can survive without Pakistan if needed. If you are willing to play, go ahead, but if there are safety concerns, we must address them first.”
The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan, with the tournament making a comeback after eight years. The last edition in 2017 saw Pakistan emerging as the champions after defeating India in the final at The Oval in London.
In light of the safety concerns, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly exploring a hybrid model for the tournament, suggesting matches be held in alternate locations like Dubai or Sri Lanka.
Pakistan has proposed Lahore as the venue for all of India’s matches to ensure ease of travel for the team and their supporters. The dates for the competition, set from February 19 to March 9, will be officially announced soon.
The upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan marks a significant cricket event in the country after a long gap. With India not touring Pakistan since 2008, the tournament provides a platform for the arch-rivals to compete once again.
