Exciting Changes Coming to IPL Retention Policy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been working on some major changes to the Indian Premier League (IPL) retention policy. According to a recent report by Cricbuzz, the board has initiated talks with IPL franchises and is expected to finalize the new policy by the end of this month.
With a mega auction scheduled for later this year, the BCCI is focusing on revamping the retention process and has already begun discussions with franchise CEOs. Along with the retention policy, the board is also looking into the salary cap for the next three years.
One interesting point mentioned in the report is that the ‘BCCI is expected to maintain the Impact Player rule for the time being’. This rule has been a topic of discussion among the franchises, with different opinions on the number of retentions.
While most franchises have requested 5-7 retentions, there is one franchise pushing for 8 retentions and some suggesting ‘no retention at all’. In the 2021 IPL auction, each franchise was allowed to retain a maximum of four players.
Another point of discussion is the purse for the franchises, with a potential increase from the current cap of Rs 100 crore by Rs 20 crore in the next auction. The Right To Match (RTM) cards were not utilized in the 2021 auction, and the BCCI is seeking feedback from franchises on this matter.
The meeting between the board and franchise CEOs is expected to take place by the end of July, as some of them are currently unavailable. Stay tuned for more updates on the exciting changes coming to the IPL retention policy!
