Welcome Archie Vaughan: The Young Rising Star of English Cricket
Exciting news from the world of cricket! Archie Vaughan, the 18-year-old son of former England captain Michael Vaughan, is all set to make his Under-19 Test debut against Sri Lanka in the upcoming week. Vaughan has been named in the 14-man England U-19 squad, along with other promising young talents like Rocky Flintoff (son of Andrew Flintoff), Farhan Ahmed, and Jaydn Denly.
A talented top-order batsman and offspinner, Vaughan recently signed his first professional contract with Somerset. He has been honing his skills with the county’s academy program since 2020. Although he is yet to make his debut for Somerset’s first team, Vaughan showcased his potential with a remarkable innings of 85 runs off 83 balls for a Young Lions Invitational XI in a warm-up match against the England U19 ODI squad. Notably, Rocky Flintoff also impressed in the same match with a century.
The significance of this upcoming match is heightened by the cricketing legacy of Vaughan and Flintoff Sr, who shared the field in 48 Tests between 1999 and 2008. Now, their sons have the opportunity to create their own partnership at the age-group level in two Tests scheduled at Wormsley from July 8-11 and Cheltenham from July 16-19.
The team will be led by Hamza Shaikh, who has previously captained Warwickshire’s second XI and is set to face the touring West Indians in a Test warm-up at Beckenham. Shaikh expressed his excitement about leading the team and is confident in his leadership abilities both on and off the field.
The England U-19 squad also includes standout performers from the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, such as Freddie McCann. With rising stars like Kesh Fonseka and Noah Thain in the mix, the team is filled with talented individuals determined to leave their mark on the global cricketing stage.
England U19s Squad: Hamza Shaikh (Warwickshire, capt), Farhan Ahmed (Nottinghamshire), Charlie Brand (Lancashire), Jack Carney (unattached), Jaydn Denly (Kent), Rocky Flintoff (Lancashire), Kesh Fonseka (Lancashire), Alex French (Surrey), Alex Green (Leicestershire), Eddie Jack (Hampshire), Freddie McCann (Nottinghamshire), Harry Moore (Derbyshire), Noah Thain (Essex), Archie Vaughan (Somerset).
We can’t wait to see Archie Vaughan and his fellow young cricketers showcase their skills on the field and make a mark in the world of cricket!
