The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to review the recently-concluded T20 World Cup at its upcoming board meeting in Colombo. According to sources, board members have raised concerns about the organization of the tournament in the USA and West Indies.
Head of events at the ICC, Chris Tetley, has resigned amidst these concerns. Some member boards have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the high expenses incurred during the USA leg of the tournament.
Questions have also been raised about the choice of New York as the central venue for important matches in the first half of the tournament, considering the performance of the temporary stadium there.
An ICC source mentioned, “The auditing is ongoing, with assumptions of potential losses in ticketing during the USA leg. The management of the tournament seemed chaotic, and the New York stadium did not meet expectations.”
The board will discuss how the organizing committee may have exceeded the allocated budget and the challenges of bringing mainstream cricket to the USA. While praising the hard work of the ICC team, the source emphasized the need to control expenses.
Regarding Tetley’s resignation, sources revealed that discussions about it had been ongoing for a year. While Tetley and another executive were asked to oversee a smooth transition following back-to-back ICC events, a decision regarding their tenure will be made at the board meeting.
