Chaos in Rajya Sabha: Opposition Walks Out During PM Modi’s Speech
The political drama unfolded in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, July 3, as the Opposition staged a walkout during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address. The trigger for the walkout was the refusal to let the Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, intervene despite repeated pleas.
After the walkout, Mallikarjun Kharge launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of "misleading" the public and "speaking against the truth." Kharge further criticized Modi, stating that the prime minister has a "habit of lying."
Events Unfold in the Rajya Sabha
Mallikarjun Kharge sought to intervene during Narendra Modi’s reply to the Motion of Thanks on President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Parliament. When Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar did not allow Kharge to speak, the Opposition MPs chanted slogans, disrupting the prime minister’s address and staged a walkout, drawing criticism from the ruling party members.
Despite the disruptions, Narendra Modi carried on with his speech amid the slogan-shouting.
Kharge vs. Modi in Rajya Sabha
Vice President Dhankar and PM Modi accused the Opposition of insulting the Constitution. Modi even went as far as to say, "Congress is the biggest opponent of the Constitution. People voted for us as they know only we can safeguard the Constitution."
Jagdeep Dhankhar condemned the walkout, labeling it as an insult to the Constitution. He expressed his disappointment, saying, "They have made a mockery of the Constitution. I hope they introspect."
Mallikarjun Kharge Calls Out Modi
After the walkout, Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated his stance, accusing Narendra Modi of habitual lying. He said, "His habit is to lie, mislead people and speak against the truth. They are against the Constitution, and now they are saying that we are against it."
In a press statement, Sharad Pawar asserted that the constitutional post of Mallikarjun Kharge should have been respected, emphasizing the responsibility of the PM and the Chairman to uphold it.
The walkout in the Rajya Sabha left a bitter taste in the political landscape, highlighting the deep divisions and tensions that persist in the Indian political arena.
