Parliament Session 2024: Unrest in Lok Sabha as Opposition Demands Justice for Manipur
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first address in the Lok Sabha following his third consecutive term, chaos erupted as the Opposition raised chants of “Manipur ko nyay do” (justice for Manipur). This outcry comes in the midst of ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, which has plagued the region for over a year.
In response to the opposition’s demands, PM Modi stated, “People have chosen us in this biggest election exercise. I can understand the pain of some people who, despite running falsehoods, were comprehensively defeated.”
Since May 3, 2023, the Opposition INDIA bloc has criticized PM Modi for his perceived silence on the ethnic violence in Manipur. The conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has led to over 220 fatalities and displaced more than 60,000 individuals, who are now living in camps within the state or seeking refuge elsewhere.
As the chants intensified, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla intervened, reprimanding the Opposition and stating, “Ye tareeqa nahi hota hai (This is no way to behave).”

During his response to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, PM Modi praised the new MPs for following parliamentary rules and contributing positively to the debate. He commended their dignified behavior despite being newcomers to the Parliament.
Despite PM Modi’s acknowledgment of the new MPs, the uproar of ‘Manipur ko Nyay Do’ continued to echo through the Lok Sabha, overshadowing his address.
Additionally, the Opposition has been pushing for a discussion on the recent NEET 2024 examination debacle, which has caused turmoil among aspirants due to widespread paper leaks and exam cancellations.
