Sam Pitroda, despite facing backlash for his controversial remarks about different ethnicities in India, has been reinstated as the chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress with immediate effect.
During the recent Lok Sabha polls, Pitroda stirred a major controversy with his racist comments about people of diverse backgrounds living in India.
In an interview with The Statesman, Pitroda stated, “We have survived 75 years in a diverse environment where people of different ethnicities coexist. India is a melting pot where individuals from various backgrounds call it home, creating a unique tapestry of cultures.”
His remarks drew criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), who condemned Pitroda’s statements as reflective of the Congress party’s mindset.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his concern over Pitroda’s remarks, highlighting the issues of typecasting and racial stereotyping in the statement.
Subsequently, Pitroda resigned as the overseas unit chief of the Congress party.
Previously, Pitroda served as an advisor to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and has had a close association with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accompanying him on his international trips.
